Mr. Funny Pants
Michael Showalter (Author)

Product Details
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (February 22, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0446542105

Product Description
"I was at my wit's end. I'd had enough of this job, this life, and my relationship had broken up. Should I eat chocolate, or go to India, or fall in love? Then I had a revelation: Why not do all three, in that order? And so it was that I embarked on a journey that was segmented into three parts and was then made into a major motion picture. Later, I woke up on an airplane with a hole in my face and a really bad hangover. I was ushered brusquely off the plane by my parents who took me to a rehab where I tested positive for coke, classic coke, special k (the drug), Special K (the cereal), mushrooms, pepperoni, and Restless Leg Syndrome. It was there that I first began painting with my feet. But rewind...the year was 1914. I was just a young German soldier serving in the trenches while simultaneously trying to destroy an evil ring with some help from an elf, a troll, and a giant sorcerer, all while cooking every recipe out of a Julia Child cookbook. What I'm trying to say is that there was a secret code hidden in a painting and I was looking for it with this girl who had a tattoo of a dragon! Let me clarify, it was the 1930s and a bunch of us were migrating out of Oklahoma, and I was this teenage wizard/CIA operative, okay? And, um then I floated off into the meta-verse as a ball of invisible energy that had no outer edge...Ugh, okay. None of this is true. I'm just kind of a normal guy from New Jersey who moved to New York, got into comedy, wrote this book about trying to write this book, and then moved to Alaska, became the mayor of a small town, spent $30,000 on underwear, and now I'm going to rule the world!!!"

What we thought: I can't remember the last book I read that made me laugh as often or as hard as Mr. Funny Pants! This book is hilarious!! Seriously, it is so random and the author goes on tangents from the starting point that end up who knows where. B often tells me my mind works this way as well, so maybe that is why I loved the book so much:) If you enjoyed the brief synopsis above, you will really love this book...this is the style it is written in and the subject matter only gets funnier the further you get into the book. Mr. Funny Pants is a quick, LOL read full of refreshing comic relief:) ABCD Diaries gives Mr. Funny Pants an A+!

ChicoBag Blossom Collection Review and Giveaway...

Thanks to ChicoBag, we recently had the chance to review a stylish reusable bag from the new Blossom Collection:
About ChicoBag:
"ChicoBag™ Company is equipping humanity with tools that will help eliminate the environmental damage caused by single-use paper and plastic bags. We have done this by designing reusable bags that are durable, tasteful and most importantly unforgettable. We believe addressing even the largest of problems starts with small solutions. In early 2004, Andy Keller, now ChicoBag™ president, took a trip to his local landfill after spending the day landscaping his backyard. He was horrified by what he saw. Single-use bags were the dominant article at the landfill that day, blanketing the landscape in a thin mix of white and beige plastic. On his way home he began to notice plastic bags everywhere, caught in trees and on fence posts, half drowned in gutter puddles and blowing in the streets like urban tumbleweeds. That day Andy vowed to stop using single-use bags. Inspired, Andy dropped a few bucks on a second hand sewing machine and began sewing what would ultimately become the first ChicoBag™ brand reusable bag.Andy understood that a reusable bag was only valuable if it was reused. He knew his challenge was larger than designing any ordinary reusable bag – this reusable bag needed to be designed to be unforgettable. It needed to be small enough to tote in a pocket and have features that allowed it to clip anywhere. After countless hours, fabrics and prototypes the Original ChicoBag™ brand reusable bag, complete with an integrated stuff pouch and attached carabiner, was born. Andy’s ChicoBag™ brand reusable bags were first sold in 2005 on Earth Day at the Farmers Market in Chico, CA. Initially only available in white, the Original has evolved to include eleven color choices." About the Blossom Collection bags:
"The Blossom Collection depicts the splendor of spring and reminds us that everything comes full circle. Each design features blossoms in full bloom helping to awaken our connection with nature. The Blossom Collection is available in the shoulder-style Vita™ and is produced using sophisticated sublimation manufacturing techniques offering a softer hand feel and unsurpassed graphic quality.
The large forty-pound carrying capacity and shoulder length straps of the bag make it the ideal reusable bag to tote on any day trip or shopping outing. Like all ChicoBag™ brand styles, the Blossom Collection bags stuff into an integrated pouch and weigh only two ounces. The perfect reusable shopping bag to keep in your purse or glove box, making single-use bags a thing of the past!"
What we thought: This new line of bags is perfect for Spring!! I really enjoyed shopping with our stylish reusable bag from ChicoBag. They are definitely portable...they fold up inside themselves to be just the right size for your purse or diaper bag which is great for those times you forget the bags in the car or at home...you can always have one or two with you! I loved the variety of designs and colors, not to mention the wide range of bag styles. I especially liked the style of the Vita bags...the strap was long enough for me to throw it over my shoulder and the bag really could hold a lot of groceries! The bag was really well-made so I wasn't afraid of the bottom falling out or the straps breaking even when the bag was filled to capacity:) I loved all the compliments I got from other shoppers and store workers on our cute Blossom bag and I can't wait to use it for other things like the library or the gym:) ABCD Diaries gives ChicoBag and the new Blossom Line an A+!!

Ji Ga Zo Review...

Thanks to Hasbro, we recently had the chance to review the latest puzzle craze from Japan...Ji Ga Zo!
About Ji Ga Zo from Hasbro:
"Not only is Hasbro a leader in the games industry, but we are also the world’s largest manufacturer of puzzles. This year, we are excited to introduce Ji Ga Zo, a revolutionary new product, which allows you to use photos to create personalized puzzles. In fact, you can use the same 300 pieces in the puzzle to make virtually any image – a child, spouse, friend, pet or celebrity! Each game comes with CD-Rom software to convert any image into a puzzle map of symbols and colors. The map is then used to transform the sepia-colored pieces into your image. Since the puzzle is assembled based on a custom map, the image can be changed, the map updated and the pieces reshuffled for hours and days of fun!"
Ji Ga Zo is revolutionizing the puzzle category! This awesome puzzle has 300 pieces that you arrange to create any face — even your own! Start out with any digital image and upload it using the Ji Ga Zo software. The software figures out the placement of each piece and builds a unique icon map. Then, it’s up to you to arrange the pieces according to the icon map and watch your own special image come together! These 300 pieces are specially created with unique colors and shading that let them interlock to create almost any face image you upload. The possibilities are virtually endless and the “face-making” fun goes on and on! CD-ROM includes icon maps for Mona Lisa, a collie dog, a kitten, a panda bear and MR MONOPOLY.
Includes CD-ROM with software and instructions, 300 puzzle pieces and assembly grid.
Adult installation required."

Check out Ji Ga Zo on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/jigazo

What we thought: This is really an incredibly unique puzzle that was fun for the whole family. The best part about this puzzle is that it can be done over and over again to make a different picture each time so you really get your money's worth:) The puzzle pieces are sorted by colors and symbols and the little ones really enjoyed helping find each piece for our picture. The images aren't super clear, but you can tell what or who it is supposed to be which is really neat. This would be great for kids 8 years old and above...even adults would love this puzzle:) ABCD Diaries gives Ji Ga Zo an A+!

Buy It: You can find Ji Ga Zo at mass merchandisers nationwide.

Biokleen Review and Giveaway...

We recently had the chance to try a Soy Toilet Scrub from the new line of soy cleaners at Biokleen.About Biokleen:
"Jim Rimer founded Biokleen in 1989. As a previous sales representative of cleaning chemicals in the commercial and industrial industry he became more and more aware of the dangers of the products he was selling and the ingredients they contained.
He saw first hand his chemicals were creating health problems for his customers, causing negative effects - including cancer - on families and pets in the homes and businesses where these supplies were being used. Jim was selling poison and this realization shook him to the core. Jim's drive to take a stand and make a difference helped motivate him to study chemistry. With his newfound knowledge and driven passion he formulated his first cleaner using natural, non-toxic ingredients. Today Biokleen continues to develop and create innovative products, which still measure up to Jim's beliefs and standards:
Effectiveness
Concentration
Non-Toxic
Environmentally Safe" Soy Toilet Scrub
"Fights Stains & Odors with Essential Mint Oil:Biokleen Soy Toilet Scrub is gentle while the acid-free formula effectively cleans, and deodorizes tough stains and odors. Made with Soybean Oil Extract, Natural Volcanic Perlite, and Grapefruit Seed Extract, Biokleen Soy Toilet Scrub provides for a natural, non-toxic, and effective alternative.
• Free of Acids and Caustics
• No harsh fumes – gentle to skin
• 99% VOC Free
• Effectively cleans and deodorizes"

What we thought: The Biokleen Soy Toilet Scrub worked really well. It left our toilets clean with minimum effort and time and with no harsh chemicals or fumes. I liked that I didn't have to let the cleaner sit for a while like we usually do...it was ready to use right after applying. Another great thing about this scrub are the tiny little micro scrubbers that do most of the work and you don't need much to get the job done! The results were sparkly toilets:) The Soy Scrub can also be used on other porcelain surfaces as well. If you are looking for a more natural and safe alternative for cleaning your home, check out the line of soy-based cleaners at Biokleen! ABCD Diaries gives the Soy Toilet Scrub an A+!

Divine Chocolate Review and Giveaway...

We recently had the chance to review a few bars of chocolate from Divine Chocolate.

About Divine Chocolate:
"The story starts in 1879 when Tetteh Quarshie first brought cocoa to Ghana from Equatorial Guinea. Since then, Ghanaian cocoa has developed a global reputation for its quality and its taste. Most of the cocoa is grown by small-scale family farmers on 4-5 acres of land. Cocoa farming is a precarious business.
Kuapa Kokoo - which means good cocoa growers - has a mission to empower farmers in their efforts to gain a dignified livelihood, to increase women's participation in all of Kuapa's activities, and to develop environmentally friendly cultivation of cocoa.
Kuapa Kokoo quickly developed a reputation for being fair and honest. In 1997, at their annual general meeting, the farmers of Kuapa Kokoo voted to set up a chocolate company of their own in order to return even more benefits to cocoa farmers. And with investment from The Body Shop and Twin Trading, and support from Comic Relief and Christian Aid, Divine Chocolate was born.

Divine Chocolate is today a leading Fair Trade brand in the UK and a pioneer in the world of socially responsible enterprise. The success of Divine means that farmers have a secure source of Fair Trade income that continues to grow year on year. Kuapa Kokoo has invested its Fair Trade income in building schools, sinking wells for clean drinking water to villages, providing mobile medical clinics for farmers in remote growing regions, and fostering women’s income generation projects to help women earn additional income for their families when the cocoa season is over. In 2006, Divine Chocolate Inc opened in Washington DC to bring fantastic Fair Trade chocolate to US consumers. The farmers of Kuapa Kokoo own one-third of Divine Chocolate in the US."

What we thought: This chocolate definitely lives up to its name! It is divine!! The two varieties we tried were the milk chocolate toffee crunch and the 70% dark. The toffee crunch was full of crunchy pieces of toffee mixed with smooth creamy milk chocolate. The 70% dark was a real treat and I savored each and every chunk:) It was rich and dark and blissfully decadent! Mmmm...Divine Chocolate is pretty great! The fact that is is fair trade chocolate makes it even better:) If you are looking for some quality chocolate bars, you should check pout Divine Chocolate!! Truvia Review and Giveaway...

About Truvia:
"Truvia natural sweetener is a great tasting, natural, zero calorie sweetener made with rebiana, the best tasting part of the stevia leaf. Not only can be it be used to sweeten coffee/tea and cereal/fruit, but you can also cook with it. Check out http://www.truvia.com/ for several great recipes, including tasty dishes from Celebrity Chefs Sam Talbot and Marisa Churchill! Stevia: the plant with a sweet secret
Sweetness born from a leaf, not in a lab. Meet the stevia plant. The proud parent of our natural sweetener. People have been sweetening foods and beverages with stevia leaves for hundreds of years. The taste comes from a natural ingredient from the leaves called rebiana. Rebiana is what gives Truvia™ natural sweetener its clean, honest sweet taste. Simple. Who knew going green could be so good?
3 Interesting tidbits about Truvia:
1.Truvia™ natural sweetener is refreshingly uncomplicated. Sprinkle it on your grapefruit. Spoon it in your coffee. It won't end up on your conscience or your thighs.
2.One packet of Truvia™ natural sweetener provides the same sweetness as two teaspoons of sugar.
3.Truvia™ natural sweetener is a great alternative for people with diabetes. It is also kosher certified"

What we thought:
We have tried quite a few sugar substitutes and I must say, Truvia is the closest we've come to an artificial sweetener tasting like sugar. You can still tell it isn't the real deal, but the taste isn't nearly as obvious as many others. It dissolves easily in cold or hot liquids and works really well in baked goods too. The scoopable canister makes baking with Truvia a breeze:) There is an extensive recipe collection on the Truvia site and I've picked a few to share with ya'll.
This apple crisp looks and sounds divine! Is your mouth watering yet? We love smoothies, so we will definitely be trying the banana berry smoothie. I was also surprised to find recipes for alcoholic drink mixes...I never would have thought of that! B is a fan of the Tom Collins, so I'm going to have him try the Steve Collins next:) As we slowly wean ourselves from sugar, Truvia will be our go-to substitute:)
ABCD Diaries gives Truvia an A for anyone in your family looking for an alternative to sugar.

Buy It: You can find Truvia at your local grocery store or mass merchandiser.

Win It:

"What A Zoo!" CD Review...

We recently had the chance to review the newest release from Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights, What A Zoo!

About WHAT A ZOO!

JOANIE LEEDS & THE NIGHTLIGHTSWITH GUEST ARTIST SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO

“BEST KIDS’ CDs of 2010: Electric guitars and Leeds’ belting vocals make this rock-and-roll. You won’t be able to resist the urge to sing along pretending your hairbrush is a microphone. Most of the tunes provide you with a great way to free your inner rock star.” – The Washington Post

“Leeds has one of those big, beautiful rock ‘n roll sopranos that can go full-out or soft and tender, and she uses it to full effect. Her tuneful melodies and rich, funny and thoughtful child-respecting lyrics give depth and irresistible zip to songs.” – Lynne Heffley, 2010 Parents' Choice® Gold Award review of Joanie Leeds’ I’m a Rock Star

Building on the momentum of her 2010 Parents’ Choice® Gold Award-winning album, I’m a Rock Star, independent children’s musician Joanie Leeds brings her attention to the animal kingdom with the April 12 release of her new kids’ CD, What a Zoo! (Limbostar, $15.00, for ages 2 – 9, run time 37 minutes). Joining Joanie and her band, The Nightlights, is the critically acclaimed “hip hop for kids” musician, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. Gifted with a soulful, “rock solid” voice and an instinctive knack for capturing the essence of any style she goes for, Joanie Leeds has delivered, with each new release, music that speaks to kids in a friendly, non-patronizing way and is imbued with artistic values that thrill admiring adults. Her presentation is notable for its child-appropriate clarity, yet vocally Joanie soars easily through a remarkable array of styles with such an enviable power and dexterity that it’s easy to forget her intended audience is under age 10. Joanie truly rocks! What a Zoo! presents ten rockin’ Joanie Leeds originals and four covers, each with its own distinctive personality that salutes every child’s fascination with our animal friends. The lyrics are thought provoking and packed with educational value. “My Butterfly” explores metamorphosis, “Sea Cow” and “Big Blue Whale” focus on endangered species, and the delightful, two beat novelty song “Tofurky” emphasizes responsible eating. Other songs are just plain fun. “Happy As A Clam” wends its way through the many animal-isms that pop up in our daily conversations, while the classic “Pony Boy” provides a sweet country touch. A brilliantly eclectic presentation of the beloved children’s folk ballad “Froggie Went a’ Courtin’“ updates Joanie’s authentic swing phrasing to include a super hip appearance by guest rapper Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. While the album is light-hearted, Joanie’s cover of the Phish song “Possum” does let kids know what happens when you don’t look both ways when crossing the street! What a Zoo! offers a perfect setting for Joanie’s vocal virtuosity and impeccable good taste. Its sophisticated humor is rooted in real life experiences and guaranteed never to wear thin with the repeated listenings this CD is bound to get. The Washington Post named Joanie Leeds’ 2010 release, I’m a Rock Star, one of the best kids’ CDs of the year. In addition to winning a Parents’ Choice® Gold Award, the album was honored with a NAPPA Award, its title track was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and the song “More Cowbell” reached #1 on WXPN’s Kids Corner. Joanie’s songs have been spinning regularly on dozens of “kindie rock” radio programs and podcasts, including Sirius/XM’s Kids Place Live. Previous to I’m a Rock Star, Joanie released two albums for adult listeners: My Job Application Knows More About Me Than You Do (2000) and Soul From My Footsteps (2004), a Parent’s Choice® Recommended children’s album, City Kid! (2008), and a children’s holiday CD, Challah, Challah (2009). Joanie’s City Kid Live! DVD, released in 2010, won three Telly Awards. What a Zoo! will be available online at www.citykidmusic.com, amazon.com , cdbaby.com , and at specialty toy and bookstores across the country."

What we thought: The kids really loved the upbeat feel of this CD and I loved the kid-friendly lyrics that also appealed to me as a mom:) I also liked the educational aspect of these songs. My kiddos were not only thouroughly entertained by What A Zoo!, but they also learned a lot about animals while listening to this CD. Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights really know how to get the kiddos up on their feet and singing and dancing along. This is definitely one of the most requested children's CDs at our house:) ABCD Diaries gives What A Zoo! an A+!

Disclosure: ABCD Diaries was given a copy of this CD for review purposes only. We were in no other way compensated. The opinions expressed in this post are ours and ours alone.

Finlandia Cheese Review and Giveaway...

We recently had the chance to review some yummy cheese from Finlandia.
About Finlandia:
"Finlandia Imported Lacey Swiss is a reduced fat, low sodium cheese, aged 60 days, resulting in more flavor than other reduced fat cheeses. A mild, yet flavorful cheese makes Lacey Swiss the ideal guilt-free snack and the perfect addition to salads, wraps and recipes. In addition to great taste, Lacey Swiss offers a host of health benefits as an all natural, lactose-free cheese with no-hormones. It contains 25% less fat than regular Swiss and can be found sliced at your local service deli counter. Finlandia is also introducing Snack Rights and Snack Lights. These high-quality, healthy cheese snacks are individually wrapped and less than 100 calories each!"

One of our favorite hot dips is spinach artichoke and this recipe sounds divine!

Hot Spinach, Artichoke & Swiss Cheese Dip
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons onion—finely chopped
2 cups light mayonnaise
*2 cups shredded Finlandia Swiss Cheese, Light Swiss or Lacey Swiss
1 box (13.5 oz) frozen spinach—thawed and well drained
10 ounces (1 can) artichokes packed in water—drained and chopped
1/2 cup grated Parmesan

Directions:
Blend first (5) ingredients together. Spoon into a baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly. Half way through baking, sprinkle Parmesan over the top and continue to bake until done.
Serve hot with crackers or sliced baguettes.
(This recipe was taken from the Finlandia website.)

What we thought: We tried the Gouda Deli Slices and they were oh so yummy! They were great for snacking and on sandwiches and they melted very nicely as well. Finlandia cheese is filled with all the good stuff and none of the bad, so I was happy knowing I was filling my family's tummies with yummy goodness without sacrificing taste. The deli slices from Finlandia are now my favorite way to buy Gouda cheese:) If you are looking for tasty, quality, good for you cheese check out Finlandia cheeses the next time you visit your deli counter:) ABCD Diaries gives Finlandia cheese an A+!

Allens Veggies Review...

Thanks to Allens we recently had the chance to try out some delicious canned beans and black eyed peas! Allen's makes several brands of frozen and canned vegetables including Trappey's beans, Popeye Spinach, Veg-All, Princella, Butterfield, Freshlike and many more.
About Allens veggies:
"Generations of families have grown up enjoying vegetables from Allens. Since 1926 we’ve been packing a variety of products including beans, greens, spinach, and sweet potatoes. We invite you to explore our web site and see all the other nutritious and delicious ways Allens can enhance your eating experience. Yes, all of Allens labels canned products are gluten free."

Seasoned Pinto Beans with Vidalia Onions

Hoppin John with Vidalia Onions

What we thought: We are big fans of Allens canned veggies and beans! We had never tried either of the varieties we were sent to review, but we pleasantly surprised by both of them:) We love pinto beans and we usually either cook them from scratch or season up a can of Trappey's. I was so excited to find a pre-seasoned variety from Allens! This really makes things a lot easier for those meals when we're short on time and don't have the luxury of slow cooking our own beans on the stove for hours. I am not really a huge fan of black eyed peas, though the rest of the family loves them. The Hoppin' John made me reconsider my dislike of the black eyed pea:) Again, they were wonderfully spiced, very flavorful and quite savory! Both can of beans tasted as if we had made them fresh and weren't squishy and soggy like some canned beans we've tried. Allens veggies are the perfect compliment to every meal. If you are looking for a quick, easy side dish without sacrificing flavor, check out the huge line of canned and frozen goods from Allens! ABCD Diaries gives Allens veggies an A+!

Buy It: You can find Allens veggies at your local grocery store or mass merchandiser.

BENGAY Pain Relief+Massage Review and Giveaway...

We recently had the chance to review BENGAY Pain Relief+Massage.

About BENGAY® PAIN RELIEF + MASSAGE:
"Powerful pain relieving gel combined with a no mess massaging applicator to target pain head-on
The makers of BENGAY®, the original topical analgesic balm created more than 100 years ago, introduce BENGAY® Pain Relief + Massage, a specially designed massaging applicator combined with the brand’s powerful pain relieving formula that provides a targeted, no mess way to directly treat sore and tender areas of the body.

· No mess, twist turn cap that allows you to control the product flow
· The legendary pain relieving power of BENGAY® gels"

What we thought: BENGAY's newest product was pretty cool. I had a little trouble opening the top, but since figuring it out I have become a pro:) The top is unique in that you can twist it to squeeze out a small amount of the gel and then close it to rub the gel in. This way your not accidentally squeezing the entire bottle onto your skin:) The massage nubs were pretty nice and allow for a pretty deep massage depending on the amount of pressure you apply. The relief from aches and pain is pretty instant, just like with other BENGAY products. The cool thing about this gel is that while it has the strong menthol smell at first(which I personally love, though I know not everyone else is fond of:) the smell quickly dissipates after a few minutes. This is a really great advancement in muscle ache treatment, because you can get no-mess massage "therapy" with some of the best pain relief gel out there:) ABCD Diaries gives BENGAY Pain Relief+Massage an A+!

Buy It: BENGAY® Pain Relief + Massage is available at nationwide drug, food, and mass market chain stores for approximately $7.79. Available size: 3 oz. tube

Win It: BENGAY has generously offered one ABCD Diaries reader a tube of Pain Relief+Massage! To enter, follow our blog via GFC and comment below.

Duraflame Stax Review and Giveaway...

We recently had the chance to review at set of Stax fire logs from Duraflame.About Duraflame Stax:
"duraflame® stax® Stackable Crackling Firelogs
duraflame® stax® is the first stackable fire log designed for use in fireplaces, wood stoves and outdoors. Shaped like split wood, stax burns with the same charred appearance and crackling sounds of a wood fire, but produces half the pollutants of an equivalent wood fire. No wood fire stacks up to this!
-Available in a pack of 3 stackable, crackling logs for one evening's fire, or a case of 6 logs for 2-3 fires
-Easy to light. Simply light the brown wrappers.
-Just 3 stax logs burn better than a typical 5 to 6-log bundle of firewood
-fireWISE®: Made from 100% renewable resources
-UL approved safety classification for use in UL-listed factory built fireplaces
-Chimney Safety Institute of America Accepted Product"

What we thought: We really enjoyed snuggling up by the fire we made with Duraflame Stax logs. They were certainly easier to light than the traditional wood fires we burn. They worked just as well as our wood fires work. The logs burned for quite a while and made the "sound effects" of a crackling wood fire:) If you love the look, feel and sound of a wood fire, but prefer something that is a little easier to light and produces less pollutants than real wood, Duraflame Stax will get the job done! ABCD Diaries gives Stax fire logs from Duraflame an A+!

Buy It: Find these fire logs and other Duraflame products at mass merchandisers nationwide!

Win It: Two ABCD Diaries reader will win vouchers for a free set of Duraflame Stax logs!! To enter, sign up to follow our blog via GFC.
