AVEENO Active Naturals + Gardener's Kit Giveaway...

We blogged a few weeks back about the AVEENO® Be An Active Natural™ Fund and the contest they are running.  They have found their THIRD winner, Rachelle Roper of Belleview, Florida and her organization Feed the Need Garden!

Here is a bit about the winner:

"While growing up, Rachelle learned all there is to know about gardening and producing her own food. During the economic downturn she recognized the need to share her insight with others in her community. From there, Feed the Need Garden was born, a non-profit with the mission “to end hunger locally by teaching those in need how to grow and preserve their own food.” Rachelle organizes local seminars where she educates those willing to learn her craft. In addition, Rachelle has donated a plot of her very own land to create what she calls, “the teaching garden,” where she invites locals to learn best practices first hand.

AVEENO’s Be An Active Natural™ Fund is awarding $10,000 grants to people monthly who are making a positive difference in their communities and Feed the Need is the latest program to receive this award.

Similar to how the ACTIVE NATURALS® ingredients in AVEENO products make a healthier and more beautiful difference for skin and hair, people can be Active Naturals too. Rachelle has used her organization to create change by caring for her community and making a difference."

In honor of Rachelle’s passion for gardening, AVEENO is offering one of our readers a special garden-starter kit (image below) as well as seeds to plant a select few of the coveted AVEENO® ACTIVE NATURALS® in their own backyard!

What we thought:  We enjoyed all three of these DVDs.  Our favorite was the heart-warming story of Smitty:)  It was a feel-good movie the whole family enjoyed.  The kiddos laughed along with the animated Freddy Frogface and Donkey X.  I would recommend Donkey X for an older audience...my kiddos are 3 and 6 and there were a few references that are definitely for an older age-group, though overall it was a cute movie:)  ABCD Diaries gives Smitty, Freddy Frogface and Donkey X an A+!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Messages from Heaven: 101 Miraculous Stories of Signs from Beyond, Amazing Connections, and Love that Doesn't Die

"The 101 true and miraculous stories in this book of signs and messages from beyond show that death may take away the physical presence of our loved ones, but not their spirit. This book is for everyone, religious or secular, as regular people share their amazing experiences with the other side."

What we thought:  This book was really interesting and thought-provoking.  The Chicken Soup for the Soul editors have compiled quite a collection of "stories of signs from beyond, amazing connections and love that never dies."  It is an inspirational book, especially for those who have lost loved ones.  ABCD Diaries gives this book an A!

Don’t fret! Phase 4 films is releasing eight new family-friendly films that are sure to keep kids entertained rain or shine! All films will be easily accessible to rent at Redbox locations and for purchase at retailers nationwide starting this summer."

The first two films in this new collection were released in June and were the first 2 we reviewed:

"Space Dogs: This lighthearted animated film is based on the true story of Belka and Strelka, two dogs sent to space in 1960 who humbly become the world’s most famous canine cosmonauts. Rated G//88 minutes"

"Kiara the Brave: The animated tale follows the courageous Princess Kiara as she conquers the evil Dreadmis and restores harmony to her beautiful kingdom, Dreamzone. Rated PG//80 minutes"

What we thought:  The kiddos enjoyed both of these animated movies. Space Dogs was a great way to teach them about the true story of the first dogs sent to space.  The characters in both Space Dogs and Kiara the Brave were colorful and funny.  The kiddos laughed along with the movies and were thoroughly entertained.  Both movies are great for summertime movie nights for the whole family!  ABCD Diaries gives Space Dogs and Kiara the Brave an A+!

"Because I Said So!" by Big Bang Boom! Cd Review...

"
Hot on the heels of winning a Grand Prize in this year's John Lennon Songwriting Contest, North Carolina's favorite power pop band for kids, Big Bang Boom, is poised to come front and center on the national stage with the September 18 release of their third studio CD, Because I Said So!

Comprised of three devoted dads who just happen to be seasoned professional musicians, Big Bang Boom is know for laying down solid, hard-rockin', parent-friendly music.  As children of the '70s and '80s, with influences ranging from the Bee Gees and KISS to Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and U2, Big Bang Boom writes music that's all about what makes pop music popular, cleverly mixing pop, alternative, hip-hop, country and other styles .  As a rule, their lyrics are written from a child's perspective, something that comes naturally to these dad-musicians, who quite pragmatically insist that this makes the "messages" in their songs more palatable than they would be if voiced by an adult authority figure.

Previous Big Bang Boom recordings include Songs Your Mom Will Like (2010) and Why Can't I Have Ice Cream? (2008).  Because I Said So will be available online at www.CDBaby.com and iTunes."

What we thought:  This CD was SO MUCH FUN!!  It's fantastically silly lyrics and poppy beats are fun for the whole family to dance and sing along with.  I so wish these guys were touring the Texas coast...I bet the show is AWESOME!  The songs really get the audience involved and that makes the CD all the more fun to listen to:)  This is definitely one of our new favorite (and most requested:) children's CDs!  ABCD Diaries gives "Because I Said So!" an A+!

What we thought:  Sea Snax are one of the most interesting snacks we've tried.  The kiddos were turned off by the color and texture, but B and I dove in and were pleasantly surprised.  To me, they tasted similar to spinach.  The olive oil and sea salt were my favorite, but we enjoyed the other flavors as well.  Sea Snax are healthy snack too!  Just a small serving is packed full of healthy goodness!  ABCD Diaries gives Sea Snax an A!

"Little Seed" CD Review and Giveaway...

Little Seed:
Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie

Elizabeth Mitchell's Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie
Available July 10

"On July 10, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released Elizabeth Mitchell's Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie, featuring re-imagined renditions of 13 kid-friendly Guthrie classics.

The only album of Guthrie’s children’s songs coinciding with the Woody Guthrie Centennial (www.woodyat100.com), 'Little Seed' pays tribute to the legendary songwriter's uncanny ability to inhabit both the perspective of a loving, protective parent and the voice of a freewheeling child. The album includes thoughtful versions of children’s songs “Riding in My Car,” “Grassy Grass Grass,” and “Bling Blang.” Mitchell also shares her version of “This Land Is Your Land,” Guthrie’s signature song that many people consider a second national anthem.

As always, she is joined on the recording by family (husband Daniel Littleton and daughter Storey) and friends, including Amy Helm, daughter of the late Levon Helm, pillars of the American acoustic music scene Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and Ruthy Ungar of Mike and Ruthy and formerly of the Mammals.

"Woody Guthrie’s songs for children are a gift to all of us. They are a part of me, part of my family," says Mitchell. "Thank you, Woody, for giving us this beautiful experience and so many others like it. We can feel this profound musical joy anytime, anywhere, with you in our spirits and your songs in our hearts."

Acclaimed by Time magazine as one of the "Stars of Kindie Rock," Mitchell is also a founding member of veteran indie rock band Ida and is one of Smithsonian Folkways' best-selling artists. 'Little Seed' is her third album with the label, following You Are My Little Bird (2006) and Sunny Day (2010), and features eight newly recorded tracks and five previously issued favorites."
Upcoming family concerts with
Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower
June 17 - Clearwater Festival in Croton-on-Hudson, NY
July 5-7 - Wolf Trap Theater in the Woods, VA
July 28-29 - Newport Folk Festival, RI

What we thought:  This is a really fun CD!  We love Woody Guthrie's folk songs and they are beautifully covered on "Little Seed" by Elizabeth Mitchell.  This is a great collection of some of our favorite Guthrie tunes.  What a great way to celebrate Woody Guthrie!  ABCD Diaries gives Little Seed an A+!

Alexia Gourmet Sides Review...

"Gourmet food company Alexia Foods offers a wide variety of oven-baked potato side dishes, artisan breads and appetizers that are a perfect complement to any recipe or summer entertaining lineup. From a gourmet burger served on Alexia Ciabatta Rolls to the perfect summer sandwich paired with Alexia’s organic Oven Crinkles french fries, the options are endless!"

In addition, New Alexia Parmesan Lemon Waffle Fries were chosen by consumers in last year’s “Reinvent a Classic” campaign, which invited Alexia fans across the country to vote for the next french fry flavor they would like to see in stores.

We reviewed Alexia’s new Parmesan Lemon Waffle Fries. "This zesty new fry flavor was chosen by consumers in last year’s “Reinvent a Classic” campaign, which invited Alexia Facebook fans to vote for the next french fry flavor they would like to see in stores."  These fries were really good!  I remember this contest from last year and I thought the dill fries sounded the best, but the winning Parmesan Lemon Waffle Fries are surprisingly delicious:)  The whole family loved them!

We also reviewed the Sweet Potato Puffs.  I am not the biggest fan of sweet potatoes, but the rest of the family really liked these.  I was impressed with how crispy they turned out.

Both the fries and the puffs were so easy to make and such a quick and convenient side dish!  ABCD Diaries gives Alexia Gourmet Sides an A+!

Almond Breeze Review and Giveaway...

About Blue Diamond®
"No one knows almonds as well as Blue Diamond does and no one knows how to grow them better than the 3,000 California almond growers who make up the Blue Diamond Growers cooperative. They’re The Almond People™, after all, and almonds have been their only business for over 100 years. Many of their growers have been co-op members for generations, so there’s a lot of family pride in each carton of Almond Breeze®.

Just the facts
• Almond Breeze is a nondairy milk alternative that is calcium-enriched and free of dairy, lactose, gluten, and soy. It is a great alternative for those with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies.
• Varieties of Almond Breeze beverages are packaged in shelf-stable Tetra Pak cartons and do not need to be refrigerated until opened. Shelf stable Almond Breeze is ultra pasteurized (a high temperature heat treatment) that ensures food is free from harmful bacteria and packaged in sealed sterile cartons with special barrier layers that keep out light, moisture and air. This special packaging protects the product quality and nutrients while locking in all the goodness of the product (learn more about Tetra Pak below).
• Almond Breeze is available in Original, Chocolate, and Vanilla flavors as well as unsweetened varieties.

Tetra Pak: Protecting what’s good
Products in Tetra Pak cartons do not need to be refrigerated until ready to be used. Product quality and nutrients are preserved thanks to ultra pasteurization (a heat treatment that ensures food is free from harmful bacteria) in combination with the packaging’s special barrier layers that lock out light, moisture and air and lock in all the goodness of the product.

Tetra Pak and the environment
• Tetra Pak cartons do more than protect taste and nutritional content. Made mainly from a renewable resource that is responsibly replenished, they help preserve Earth’s resources for future generations.
• Lightweight and compact, Tetra Pak cartons have a low carbon footprint because they are energy efficient through manufacturing, shipping, distribution, use, and end of life.
• On average, 70% of the carton is made of wood fibers from trees that are carefully chosen, selectively harvested, and
responsibly replenished to help create the forest sink, which helps to keep our climate in balance and to preserve biodiversity.
• You can conveniently recycle Tetra Pak cartons at home. Once recycled, Tetra Pak cartons become things like tissue products, building materials, railway ties, and even flower pots. For more information on carton recycling, visit recyclecartons.com.

What we thought:  Prior to sampling Almond Breeze, we had never tried other almond milks.  We are big fans of Blue Diamond products though so we were excited to try something new.  If you are a fan of almonds and are looking for a non-dairy milk, you should try Almond Breeze.  It has a smooth, nutty flavor that is really yummy. We used ours in place of milk over cereal and it was great!  Even the kiddos enjoyed trying this new product:)  ABCD Diaries gives Almond Breeze an A!

Dinosaur Train Books Review...

CELEBRATE THE GREAT AMERICAN BACKYARD CAMPOUT INITIATIVE WITH DINOSAUR TRAIN AND PENGUIN YOUNG READERS GROUP
"Join the Dinosaur Train Nature Tracker’s Club for FREE for fun activities to enjoy while camping out!
DINOSAUR TRAIN’s “Buddy” supports “The Great American Backyard Campout” initiative, organized by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), started on June 23. The campaign is devised to remind parents and children the importance and benefits of spending time outdoors.
“Nature,” as part of childhood, has changed to not having much nature in it at all.  The NWF provides some interesting facts about just how much times have changed, and the implications of spending less time outdoors.  Did you know for example:
Children are spending half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago. (Juster et al 2004); (Burdette & Whitaker 2005); (Kuo & Sullivan 2001)
Today, kids 8-18 years old devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes using entertainment media in a typical day (more than 53 hours a week).(Kaiser Family Foundation)
In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on their own. (Children & Nature Network, 2008)
Children who play outside are more physically active, more creative in their play, less aggressive and show better concentration. (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005; Ginsburg et al., 2007)
Sixty minutes of daily unstructured free play is essential to children’s physical and mental health. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2008)
The most direct route to caring for the environment as an adult is participating in “wild nature activities” before the age of 11. (Wells and Lekies, 2006)
Be a part of the NWF’s “Great American Backyard Campout” and set an example for children that will get them excited about the great outdoors!
You can participate in the campaign by registering for FREE at http://www.nwf.org/Get-Outside/Great-American-Backyard-Campout.aspx.   The website provides FREE helpful information to make your camping experience a fun one, including campfire recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, campfire songs and games, nature activities and much more.
Buddy and the clan from Dinosaur Train want to ensure you’ll have some extra fun during your campout with these latest books from Penguin Young Readers Group.

In Dinosaur Campout, (pictured at the top of this post) The Pteranodon family is going on a campout! This adorable 8 x 8 is perfect for a first camping trip or night away from home. (SRP: $3.99).

And in Ride with Buddy, Buddy introduces readers to his friends and family on the Dinosaur Train. This Level 2 reader is perfect for young fans who are starting to read on their own.

And don’t forget to download Dinosaur Train’s Nature Trackers Club Guide Book, available here, filled with fun activities that you can also enjoy during your campout.  The Dinosaur Train Nature Tracker’s Club is a community of young children, their families and educators committed to learning about nature and doing good things for their environment.   Nature Trackers enjoy exploring and having adventures, respecting their environment, collecting things, tracking and observing plants and animals, and challenging themselves to get outside and make discoveries every day. When you have completed all four activities in the Guide Book, simply mail in the form provided in the download and receive an official Nature Trackers member token!"

What we thought:  The kiddos really enjoyed the latest titles from the Dinosaur Train series of books. A especially enjoyed the Level 2 reader, "Ride with Buddy" since she is reading on her own now:)  Both titles were lots of fun and are requested quite often during our daily read aloud time.  It is very important to get our families out into nature and we'll take all the help we can get from Buddy and his friends from the Dinosaur Train:)
